Roofing Issues In the WINTER

Ice dams, Most homeowners have either had this happen or know of some one who had this issue. Especially in Pittsburgh were you never know what our weather is going to do. The main why to prevent ice dams is to prevent them from occuring. Ridge vent or another ventalation system such as a fan can prevent the attic from warming up and melting your snow, which in turn will prevent ice from forming. Another way to prevent ice dams are to insulate your attic, making sure not to block off your soffit panels from breathing. You need at least 1 inch of ventalation for air flow.
Another good solution is to make sure you have Ice and Water guard (Winterguard). This should be installed under your shingles and in direct contact with your decking, there should be nothing inbetween the two. This is most commonly done when the roofing system is replaced, EAS Roofing puts winter guard in any problematic areas exceeding the building code requirements.
If all else fails and you have an area that needs something extra ice melting cables will do, just make sure they are installed by the same company that did your roof so there is no warranty issues. Since EAS Roofing is certified with CertianTeed shingles no one can work on the inless they are also a "Select Shingle Master", there are other companies out there.
